The Genre: fan-service |
| The Format: 12 (of 18) volumes of manga from
Media Blasters |
|
|
| The plot: Densuke just enrolled at the exclusive
Zashono academy. He's eager to participate in extracurricular
activities, but he never expected to join the mysterious
Eiken Club. Strangely enough, every other member
is a busty co-ed, and many of the club activities
involve bikinis. But Densuke isn't interested in
anyone but the shy and beautiful Chiharu.
Will he overcome the wall of women that stand between
him and true love? Or is he doomed to a lifetime
of bizarre double-entendre inducing situations? |

| opinion |
| Eiken is rubbish.
Well that was easy.
Oh wait, I forgot, I'm supposed to say why I think
it's rubbish.
Well, it's because... er, well... it's not very
good, I guess. That wasn't very productive, so let's
start from the beginning.
Eiken is about fan service.
|
I don't mean that it's fan-service heavy,
or that fan-service is used excessively in
the same way as something like Godannar, I
mean that it's used exclusively and without
any other real motivation. It is the reason
for Eiken's existing.
The Eiken of the title is an after-school
club type thing that doesn't really have any
actual purpose. Unlike, say, a manga club
or a tennis club, Eiken is just a club with
no activity. Well, except for fan service.
Most of Eiken's members have enormous boobs.
And I don't just mean regular enormous, this
is a vast cornucopia of boob flesh. There's
enough boob-poundage between Eiken's members
to make at least four whole people.
And the members that aren't well endowed
have other ample charms--shapely curves, delicious
butts, moe cuteness, etc, etc. The same principles
also apply to all the other random women in
the series.
|
 |
|
The proper genre Eiken comes closest to is a
harem show. Actually, is that a genre? When you
watch enough anime you start to accept things like
"harem" and "giant robot" as
'genres' when really they're not--they're more like
themes.
Anyway, the point is that basically, all of the
women our male lead Densuke meets fall in love with
him at some level or another. Quite why this is
when Densuke is about as dynamic as dead squirrel
isn't entirely clear. But then, that's the real
point of this type of thing.
It's a fantasy, aimed squarely at the nerdy reader
who is a lot like Densuke. He's been thrust into
a situation where all the women are gorgeous and
are all running the range of desire from pining
over him, to throwing themselves at him.
|
 |
The other required element for a harem show is
comedy, and we have quite a bit of that too. Of
course, all of it is comedy based around fan-service.
It would be a shock if it wasn't, and as it goes
it's okay.
Perhaps the only real thing that stands out about
Eiken is that Densuke seems genuinely torn between
all the girls that he meets. Really, his heart lies
with Chiharu, but he does seem to have genuine interest
in the other girls. Whilst not spectacular, this
does lend a slight edge to proceedings, because
both Densuke and Chiharu are extremely shy.
They therefore never actually express their mutual
affection for each other, whereas most all of the
other female characters are much more open about
their feelings for him. Or certainly, it's made
much plainer to him that they like him.
|
 |
This does lend things a slight air of tension
in that it would be possible for him to go
with any of the women other than Chiharu,
but he doesn't take the opportunity.
It's not much to go on, but then part of
this review is also about why I keep reading
the manga. I mean, really it's not actually
very good.
The plot is wafer thin, situations are predictable,
and the whole thing is pretty much strung
out with so much filler material you could
re-plaster a wall.
Also the artwork is really weird. I don't
want to really say that in a bad way, I mean,
it's better than I could ever do, but, I dunno,
it's very stylised.
|
|
Where you might expect soft curves, we get quite
heavy musculature, and there's a strong tendency
for the artist to use big, thick lines, like he's
drawing with a fat marker, where flowing lines would
lend things a softer edge. Also, as I say, it's
very stylised--the characters are proportioned weirdly
(I mean, as well as the mega-boob thing) with big,
gangly feet, necks about a foot long, and other
weirdities.
Also, it's very inconsistent. Sometimes the images
are nice, sometimes they're horrible, but also the
boobs seem to grow and shrink like car airbags.
If a character crosses their arms, generally their
boobs seem to disappear, even though that much boob
would surely have to go somewhere.
So if it's all this bad, why the hell do I keep
buying and reading it?
I've honestly no idea :/. |
