| One of my all-time favouritist things in the
entire world are slim, large breasted ladies.
There.
I’ve said it.
I’m not necessarily proud of myself, but
it’s the truth none the less.
For sure, personality counts for a lot, and a sense
of humour goes a hell of a long way, but if I were
constructing my own perfect lady the first area
for consideration would be the size of the wobbly
bits. I mean, a nice butt is somewhere high on the
list as well, but definitely right up there at the
top are h00j b00bs. |
Which, rather neatly (even if I do say
so myself), brings me crashing headlong into
the subject of this review- Gold Digger. Or
more precisely- the first two volumes of the
Gold Digger anime.
Those of you who are completely unfamiliar
with the whole Gold Digger (GD) thang should
go and read the plot summary sections and
take a butchers at some of the screen grabs.
But to cut a long story short, the the man
behind GD, one Fred Perry, is, shall we say,
a like-minded individual?
In other words he also likes the boobs of
bigness and with GD being his creation he
gets free reign to draw ‘em as big as
he likes. Whereas me, my job at the moment
is to assure you that he doesn’t waste
the opportunity. |

Gina Diggers (the hero) has huge breasts. Cheetah
(her were-cheetah sister) has huge breasts. Brianna
(their other “sister”) has huge breasts.
In fact, very few of the characters don’t
have huge breasts... and presumably most of them
have a lot of back problems to.
Okay, so I’ve just spent way more than 250
words explaining about the boobs, so maybe I should
move onto the actual reviewing? Now there’s
a thought.
The Gold Digger comic has been running since way
back in 1991, when Antarctic Press published a 6
part (I think) mini-series in the pages of Mangaverse.
These two anime (along with the to be released part
3) are essentially a re-telling of that very story.
Of course, with the passing years, Fred’s
artistic style and story-telling abilities have
developed significantly, but the animation remains
remarkably similar to the original.
One of the brilliant things about Gold Digger is
that Fred has a great big story arc curving throughout
the entire series. As such, since this is simply
an animated adaption of the still ongoing comic,
it’s not surprising that the basic plot remains
un-touched. Whilst on the one hand this is a very
good thing, it also left me yearning for something
original- an OAV proper, if you will, rather than
a mere adaption. |
 |
Still, that’s not to say that the story
isn’t an engaging one, even if the production
lets the side down a bit. Boy, I feel really bad
about bringing this up, but I think I need to be
honest. The production is pretty poor; in fact,
on the first disc it’s downright awful.
The reason I feel bad about saying this is two-fold.
Firstly, it’s ‘cos I’m a biiiiig
big GD fan (no, really?) but the second is that
Fred essentially did these two cartoons all by himself.
Obviously he wrote them, but he also animated, directed
and produced them. He even did all of the voices
for the first one (don’t worry they got some
proper voice actors in to re-dub the girls, but
I for one would pay good money to hear the original).
So you can see why I feel bad. More talent in his
little finger than in my whole body and all that.
And speaking of voices and sound, it’s this
that really lets the first disc down. Yes, the animation
is a bit jittery, yes the range of sound effects
is quite limited and yes the background music is
a bit too repetitive, but these are all minor sins.
The major production problem is the sound quality.
Many of the voices are crackly, the levels are all
over the place and it really is excruciating to
listen too, especially on the first disk.
See, now look what you’ve made me do! I was
perfectly happy talking about boobs, but oh no,
you were all like “What are you going on about
trigs? Tell us about the DVDs!” So now I feel
like a right arsehole. Thanks for that. |
 |
I jest. The production is obviously poor
as a result of the very limited budgets. This
is clearly shown by the massive improvement
of the second over the first, where there
was more cash to go round.
As for the VA’s themselves they do
a fine job. Gina even sounds almost exactly
like I’d pictured her (eh?), and I can’t
wait for later episodes in order to hear how
the rest of the GD gang turn out.
They certainly look good, I must say. Fred's
art style seems to lend itself very well to
animation, with his comic panels often having
a film storyboard feel. All he seemingly has
to do is fill in the gaps between the panels
and hey-presto animation :). |
|
So overall, what am I saying then? Well what
I think I’m saying is that you need to be
a fan to get the most out of these DVDs. It’s
not that you already need to be familiar with GD
or anything like that, it’s just that the
production will be a big turn off if you aren’t
up for a bit of rose-tinted spectacle wearing.
Which is a shame actually, and part of me wishes
that someone like Fox had picked up GD for serialisation.
They’d have had a big chunk of money to wield,
though some of the characters would have ended up
adapted, I’m sure. On the other hand, I’m
very glad Fred’s doing it all. Especially
seeing as such an animated version of GD would inevitably
get cancelled before it finished (not cos it's bad,
it's just too long to withstand the slings and arrows
of modern audiences).
Besides, it’s his baby- he should be the
one breast-feeding it to the levels of success it
deserves.
Mmmm... breasts. |
