harem review
"A lot of the anime I've watched and manga
I've read can broadly be summed up as being "romantic
comedy".

I wouldn't say I've actively sought it out,
it's just that it's a very popular genre in the
world of anime. Or at least, a few particular flavours
of romantic comedy are. Mainly, the things I'm thinking
of are those involving harems and instant girlfriends.
Often these crop up in the same thing.
In a harem, the protagonist will steadily acquire
a bevy of hot babes. On occasion we join the story
when they've already got such a harem, but generally,
the thrust of the story will be the steady introduction
of more and more babes."

| ouran
host club review
"I think a quick scan of the anime and
manga I've uploaded reviews for on here shows that
I've watched a lot of harem shows. I therefore seem
to spend lots of time in reviews explaining what
harem romantic comedies are all about.

Well I'm going to take your understanding pretty
much as read this time and say that Ouran High Host
Club is a reverse harem. Which is to say that if
a harem is a dude surrounded by girls, a reverse
harem is a girl surrounded by dudes.
And not just any dudes - in this case, the
title character, Haruhi, winds up surrounded by
all sorts of shoujo-tropes. There's the flamboyant
prince type, the cold, analytical type, the twins,
the strong, almost silent type and the short-arse
cutie-pie type."

blade review
"So what I'm saying is that to read Bamboo
Blade you really don't need to know anything over
at all about Kendo. Anything you do need to know
is nicely explained in a simple way.

And what's more, the creators of Bamboo Blade
are canny enough to realise that simply explaining
the Kendo bits are all you need to do.
First off, they've populated the manga with
a whole host of interesting characters. It's really
an ensemble piece - some of the characters take
centre stage in parts, and others in other parts.
However, they've been clever enough not to make
it as lumpy as that."

review
"So anyway - It's a trap!
Do you know to what this quote refers?

It's originally a reference to Star Wars. In
the third film of the original trilogy, The Empire
Strikes Back, General Ackbar shouts "It's a
trap!" when the rebels turn up to destroy the
2nd death star, only to discover that the shields
are still up and the Empire is there and ready to
whup some rebel butt."

| dragonaut:
the resonance review
"Boobanaut: The Jiggling.

If Dragonaut's fan-service actually achieved
the levels that are implied by the character designs,
then that might work as a pun. But as it is, although
the vast majority of the female characters have
boobs bigger than their heads, there's not actually
that much out-right fan-service.
I mean, sure, you can easily make the argument
that simply by being on-screen, some of these girls
could be counted as fan-service, but if you take
a more strict view then there's not as much as you
might think. A good example is the fighting - you'd
think that would be an ideal opportunity to show
jiggling boobs and shredding clothes and the like,
right?"
